What Happens When You Stop Accepting "Getting Older" as an Excuse?
When Shawn G. walked into a local suit store before his daughter's wedding, he expected to feel excited. Instead, he left disappointed.
His daughter, Bri, was getting married in June of 2024, and Shawn had already begun trying to lose weight on his own. He knew he was making progress, but when he was measured for a suit, the results were not what he had hoped for.
"I had already lost some weight before I went to the suit store," Shawn said. "I was disappointed because I thought I would be further along than I was."
For many people, that moment would have been easy to dismiss. It could have become just another reminder that losing weight gets harder with age. Instead, it became a turning point.
The Wake-Up Call
Shawn asked the salesperson how long he had before he needed to be fitted again. The answer was the end of April. That gave him a few months to make a change.
"I said, 'Okay, I'm going to a gym.'"
When he returned for his next fitting, the reaction was unforgettable.
"I came back at the end of April and I was a 46," Shawn recalled. "The guy about fell over and asked, 'What did you do?'"
The story makes people laugh when Shawn tells it, but the suit was never the real issue. The extra weight was only one symptom of a larger problem that had been developing for years.
When "Getting Older" Starts Feeling Normal
Like many men in their 50s, Shawn had slowly begun to accept things that once would have frustrated him. His energy levels were lower than they used to be. He felt weaker. His back would flare up from time to time, often resulting in another trip to the chiropractor. None of those changes happened overnight, which made them easy to explain away as part of the aging process.
"Really, the biggest piece was lack of energy," he said. "I had a lack of strength, a lack of core strength, and I was frustrated."
Those frustrations are familiar to many adults. Careers become more demanding. Family responsibilities increase. Health gradually moves down the priority list. Over time, it becomes easy to believe that feeling tired, sore, and physically limited is simply the price of getting older.
What Shawn discovered was that many of those limitations were not caused by age itself. They were the result of habits, strength levels, and physical capacity that had slowly declined over time.
The Goal Was Never Just Weight Loss
One of the original goals that brought Shawn to Rise was reducing the recurring back problems he had experienced for years. His chiropractor had often reminded him that a stronger core would help support a stronger back. Shawn knew the advice was sound, but knowing what to do and consistently doing it are two different things.
Over the next several months, he focused on building consistency rather than chasing perfection. He committed to training three days per week and worked on improving other areas of his health, including hydration and protein intake. The changes were not dramatic from one week to the next, but they accumulated over time.
The wedding provided the initial motivation, but what kept him going was how he started feeling.
The Unexpected Benefit: Feeling 15 Years Younger
Looking back, the most surprising result was not the weight loss.
It was how much better he felt.
"The energy level was so much higher," Shawn said. "I know I originally said I felt 10 years younger, but it truly is at least 15 years."
That renewed energy began showing up in every area of his life. Work felt more manageable. Physical tasks that once seemed difficult became easier. Activities that required strength and endurance no longer felt like obstacles.
The physical improvements were undeniable as well. Shawn has completed bodyweight pull-ups, performed 39-inch box jumps, and pushed or pulled weights that would have seemed unrealistic just a few years earlier.
"Now being in my late 50s, I’m being able to do things here that I never dreamed I'd be doing," he said.
Perhaps even more importantly, he no longer viewed aging as a slow and inevitable decline.
The Hidden Cost of Poor Health
The improvements Shawn experienced were not limited to the gym.
Before Rise, recurring chiropractor visits had become a normal part of life. A back issue would flare up, recovery would follow, and eventually it would happen again.
Today, that cycle is gone.
"I've not been to any kind of chiropractor or had any kind of injuries while I've been here at Rise," he said. "I can't go back any two years in time and say that."
Those improvements also changed how he thought about the cost of investing in his health.
Like many people considering coaching, Shawn recognized that a structured fitness program costs more than a traditional gym membership. However, his perspective shifted when he compared that cost to what poor health had already been costing him.
"The value of the cost is easy when you look at what you would have spent at the chiropractor, what you would have spent at the doctor, or what you would have spent on medications," he said.
Since improving his health, Shawn has reduced medications, reduced the frequency of doctor visits, and eliminated many of the issues that previously required ongoing attention.
Training for the Next Chapter
Today, Shawn's motivation extends well beyond weight loss or fitness goals.
He thinks about the future. He thinks about remaining active during retirement. He thinks about continuing to hunt, fish, travel, and enjoy the activities that matter to him. He thinks about family.
One part of the interview stood out in particular when Shawn described the reason he continues prioritizing his health.
"To be able to get down on the floor and play with kids and not feel like you can't get back up."
That image resonates because it captures what so many adults are truly seeking. Most people are not pursuing fitness for the sake of fitness. They are pursuing the ability to fully participate in their lives.
For Shawn, that means staying strong enough to enjoy the years ahead instead of simply managing decline.
