What gets measured gets managed

Why tracking nearly everything - from sleep to time spent scrolling on social media - is super important.

Megan Miller

The phrase “what gets measured gets managed” is something I love to talk about and bring up when anyone is working towards becoming the best version of themselves. Measurement creates awareness. Awareness drives action. Action produces sustainable results.

When we don’t quantitatively measure something, we have no real way of knowing where exactly we’re at. We rely on memory, emotion, or guesswork, all of which rarely leads to consistent progress.

Here is a look at a few examples of what I’m talking about.

Finances

Think about your finances. If you don’t track what’s coming in and what’s going out, it’s nearly impossible to manage your money effectively. Without measurement, spending becomes reactive and might be driven by emotional decisions rather than numbers-based ones.

When you measure your income, expenses, and savings, you gain clarity and control. You can adjust, reduce, invest, or redirect. But you can’t improve your finances if you don't track them.

Training

The same principle applies to training.

At Rise, we track and record the weights lifted and reps in each session. Why? Because improvement requires a reference point. If you don’t know what you lifted last week, how can you aim to lift more this week?

Measurement in training provides:

  • Direction

  • Motivation

  • Accountability

  • Evidence of progress

Nutrition

Measurement also applies to nutrition. That doesn’t necessarily mean weighing every bite (although short-term tracking can be helpful for building awareness), but it means having a system in place.

Maybe it’s:

  • Tracking protein intake

  • Tracking fiber intake

  • Monitoring daily water consumption

  • Logging meals for a few weeks

  • Watching portion sizes

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s awareness. When you measure your nutrition, you start to notice patterns, which can help you make necessary adjustments.

The busy life excuse

We all live busy lives. And ironically, the busier we are, the more important measurement becomes. Without something concrete to track, we assume we’re “doing enough” simply because our days feel busy.

Measurement doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time. In fact, it can take hardly any time at all (think about how quickly you can jot down a note in your phone about how many grams of protein you ate at breakfast… probably in under 60 seconds.) Your system of measurement just needs to be consistent in a way that can give us real, tangible numbers to look at. We talk often about the 80/20 rule here at Rise. Progress over perfection!

Why most people quit

Most people don’t fail because they aren’t capable…they fail because they quit before results show up and they get discouraged. But real, sustainable progress often happens slowly and quietly.

When you don’t measure the different areas of your lifestyle, it’s easy to feel like nothing is happening, which is frustrating and may make it tempting to want to give up.

But when you measure you see proof. Small wins like lifting 5 more pounds, being able to complete one more rep, making better food choices, or having a great week of consistent health choices can quickly add up and build the momentum you need to keep going.

The Rise approach

One of our goals at Rise is to help you measure and manage the small daily details that, over time, improve every area of your life. Things like exercise, nutrition, sleep, and other personal goals.

When you consistently measure the right things, you build awareness, make better decisions, and eventually, create a lifestyle that lasts. When we measure something, we obtain the data we need to effectively manage it. What an empowering way to take control of our health, wellness, and other impactful areas of our lives.

Rise members, keep your eyes peeled... we are working on a fun project behind the scenes that will help you clearly measure and manage your own lifestyle habits. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement, coming soon!
