Ways to get outside in the winter

Getting outside and continuing to be active can be hard during the winter, especially living in the midwest. But never fear, there are still ways to have fun and enjoy the outdoors even in the heart of winter!

Getting outside in the winter in Minnesota can be TOUGH. As someone who loves the outdoors and wants to soak up as much time outside as I can, here are a few things I have tried out to hit my quota of outdoor time during wintertime in the midwest.

Outdoor ice skating in Downtown Fargo

For those of you who don’t know, I played ice hockey in college, so finding all the rinks in the Fargo/Moorhead area was one of my top priorities as a freshman. When my parents came to town for games in the winter, we often stopped by the outdoor ice rink in downtown Fargo and even got ice cream to prove we were true midwesterners. Whether you are an old hat at ice skating or looking to try it out for the first time, this is a great venue in the heart of downtown Fargo.

Outdoor activities at Edgewood Chalet

If you are a cross country skier or want to try out different activities in the snow, this is a great place to check out. Edgewood is a golf course that boasts a range of winter activities once the temperatures drop too low for a good golf game. They have skis and snowshoes you can rent, and sleds that are free to use on their sledding hill. My parents and I spent a few hours on their trails several years ago and enjoyed hot chocolate from their snack bar after we got chilly. If you have young kids and want to tire them out while you enjoy a hot drink at the top of the sledding hill, this is the place to go!

Frostival

This one is new to me, but I recently stumbled across the Frostival website and can’t wait to check it out at the end of January! From a pond hockey tournament to outdoor concerts, Frostival includes events like a sled race, birding education session, winter golf, a polar pickleball faceoff, and outdoor camping to spice up the winter season. We will gladly take on any challengers for the adult snowball fight who would like to go up against the Rise coaches!

Even though the Minnesota winter is fully upon us, there is no reason to stay cooped up inside this season. Enjoy your hot cocoa by the fire, then get outside to try out some of these winter adventures!

Need someone to go with? Don’t hesitate to reach out to a Rise coach and get us involved in the winter shenanigans! We love an excuse to be active and connect with our Rise members outside of the gym.
