Holiday Survival Guide

Our top tips for navigating the holiday season.

Megan Miller

The holiday season can be one of the most joyful – and stressful – times of the year. While it is a time for celebration and connection, it can also throw off your regular routine. With a bit of planning, you can stay on track and still enjoy all the festivities. Here are some practical tips to help you maintain your health and fitness routine this holiday season.

1. Make a plan and stick to it

As we head into the holidays, having a plan in place is key to staying on track. When it comes to nutrition, there are a few strategies to consider:

  • Portion Control: When facing an island full of food, take a moment to check out your options. Grab small portions of the items that appeal to you most, and sit down away from the food table. Once you’ve tasted a little of everything, you can decide what dishes are worth going back for another serving.

  • The One-Plate Rule: To avoid overindulging, limit yourself to just one plate of food. Fill it up with your favorites. It is a simple way to enjoy everything you love without going overboard.

  • Dessert Strategy: There is nothing wrong with dessert, and like all things, it’s just fine in moderation. If you are a fan of sweets, you may consider having one large dessert (like a slice of pumpkin pie with ice cream) or two smaller treats.

2. Stay hydrated

Hydration is key 365 days out of the year. Our bodies are made up of 50-60% water, so staying hydrated should be a priority. Keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day or set timers to be your daily reminder. Your body–and your energy levels–will thank you. Drinking plenty of water is especially important if you are drinking alcohol at holiday parties or gatherings.

3. Move your body

As the temperatures drop, it is easy to feel the urge to hibernate indoors. It is more important than ever to continue to stay active. Whether it is going for a walk with family or friends, crushing a workout at Rise, or even walking at the mall, it is imperative that you prioritize movement. As the saying goes, “A body in motion stays in motion.” Movement can help boost your mood, energy, and metabolism. Inviting someone to join you for a walk or a workout is a great way to connect with others, too.

4. Enjoy the Moment

While the holidays can get hectic, it is important to pause and appreciate the time spent with loved ones. A little gratitude goes a long way during the holiday bustle.

Remember, the holiday season is just a few short days in the grand scheme of a year. One “off” day won’t unravel your progress. Instead of stressing over it, get back into your routine the next day. Focus on consistency over perfection, and don’t be too hard on yourself. We are always here to help you stay accountable.
