Great coaches never stop learning

Why we brought one of the region's most respected strength coaches to Rise - and why it matters for your health after 40.

When people compare gyms, they usually look at equipment, class schedules, amenities, location, and monthly membership costs. Those things matter, but we don't think they're the most important question to ask.

A better question is this: Who is making decisions about your health?

Every exercise in your program, every progression, every modification for an old injury, and every adjustment during a stressful season comes from a coach. When you are choosing a gym like Rise, you're not simply choosing a place to work out - you're choosing the people responsible for helping you become stronger, healthier, and more capable for years to come.

That responsibility is something we take seriously.

One of the biggest lessons we've learned over the years is that great coaching is never static. The rules of fitness change as we age, research continues to evolve, and every coach - no matter how experienced - has more to learn. That's why one of our core beliefs at Rise is simple:

Great coaches never stop learning.

Several years ago, we wrote a blog called Even a Coach Needs a Coach. The idea was straightforward: the best professionals in any field never assume they've arrived. Surgeons continue learning throughout their careers. Pilots complete ongoing training. Professional athletes have coaches, and those coaches are constantly learning from one another. The best of the best in any industry stay curious because they understand that experience isn't the finish line.

That's exactly why we recently invited Coach Jim Kramer, longtime strength coach for NDSU Bison Football, to spend time with our coaching team.

For many people in the Fargo-Moorhead area, Coach Kramer is one of the most respected strength coaches around. We didn't bring him in because we wanted to overhaul our programming or train everyday adults like Division I athletes. We brought him in because we wanted another experienced perspective; someone to challenge our thinking, validate what we're doing well, and help us continue refining how we coach our members. Creating the best possible member experience is extremely important to us, and we knew Coach Kramer would be a great mentor for our team.

However, you may be wondering what a college strength coach has to do with the fitness journey of someone who is in their 40s, 50s, 60s, or 70s. The answer is: more than you might think.

Most of our members aren't chasing athletic championships. They're trying to keep up with their kids or grandkids, enjoy their vacations, carry heavy groceries or do yardwork more easily, hike without pain, and stay independent as they grow older.

While those goals are different from an athlete's, the principles behind great coaching are actually quite similar. Movement quality, progressive strength training, recovery, consistency, and individualized programming all matter whether you're preparing for a football season or preparing for everyday life.

As we get older, having a good coach becomes more important. Work gets busier. Families demand more of our attention. Stress affects recovery. Old injuries begin to resurface. A good coach understands those realities and knows when to challenge you, when to modify your program, and how to help you continue making progress without simply asking you to do more.

That's the difference between just following a workout and actually being coached.

At Rise, you'll continue to see our team reading, researching, collaborating, attending continuing education, and learning from respected professionals like Coach Kramer. Not because we think we've mastered everything there is to know, but because we believe our members deserve coaches who are committed to getting better every year.

We truly believe that our members deserve coaches who stay curious, welcome new ideas, and are committed to continually improving the way they serve the people who trust them.

Because when our coaches get better, your experience gets better. Your program gets better. And over time, your results get better.
