Common abbreviations used in the gym

Learn some of the basic abbreviations that are used in the gym.

Learning the names of exercises and what they are is difficult enough, not to mention a laundry list of abbreviations that are commonly used around the gym. We get it, seeing something like “HK SA OH DB PRESS” can seem a bit overwhelming. Which is why we’ve rounded up a “cheat sheet” for you with a list of the most common abbreviations that are used in the gym and in programming. These will help give you a leg up when you come in to learn new movements. 

  • SA = single arm

  • SL= single leg

  • OH= overhead

  • DB= dumbbell

  • BB= barbell

  • KB= kettle bell

  • Prone= lay on belly

  • Supine= lay on back

  • HK= half kneeling

  • TK = tall kneeling 

  • MB= med ball

  • SB= stability Ball

  • ALAP = as long as possible

  • AMRAP= as many reps as possible 

  • LX= lacrosse ball

  • FFE= front foot elevated

  • RFE = rear foot elevated

  • ROM = range of motion

This list isn’t exhaustive, but it covers a majority of the commonly used abbreviations around the gym.
