With a holiday weekend coming up, we know it can feel daunting to be out of your normal routine while trying to pursue your health and fitness goals. Like we always say - one “off” day won’t unravel all the hard work you’ve put in at the gym over months or years.
But of course, the best way to succeed in anything is to prepare. Here are 4 simple focus points to keep in mind during your Labor Day weekend. And as a bonus, these can translate to every holiday, travel day, or gathering you have from now through the end of the year.
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is to adjust your routine rather than simply writing it off.
1. Focus on Balanced Meals
Around here, we talk about building a meal or snack around protein, carbohydrate, and color. Even when your schedule gets hectic, try to build balanced meals throughout the day.
This gives your body the nutrients it needs while helping you feel satisfied and energized.
When you’re at a holiday gathering, scan the options, choose the foods you genuinely want, and enjoy them mindfully. Take reasonable portions, eat slowly, and give yourself permission to enjoy the experience without guilt.
2. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is important 365 days a year, but it can be especially easy to overlook during holidays, travel, and busy weekends.
Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day and make an effort to drink regularly. Staying hydrated supports your energy levels, digestion, and overall well-being.
And if you’re enjoying alcoholic beverages at gatherings, be extra intentional about drinking water throughout the day as well.
3. Move
If you don’t have time for your normal workout, finding even 20–30 minutes to move your body can be extremely beneficial.
There’s a reason the phrases “motion is lotion,” “movement is medicine,” and “a body in motion stays in motion” have been longtime favorites at Rise. We are meant to move.
Take a walk. Do a quick workout. Play outside with your family. Get some extra steps in. It doesn’t have to be complicated or perfect. Just keep moving.
4. Enjoy the Moment
Most importantly, enjoy the weekend.
Spend time with your family. Enjoy the traditions. Eat the foods you love. Laugh. Rest. Practice gratitude.
One “off” day will not undo your progress. The problem comes when one day turns into an entire month of deciding you’ll “get back on track when things calm down.”
Instead, enjoy the moment and simply return to your routine the next day.
Consistency over perfection.
